Calling Texas!

In 8 hours I’ll venture on my first ever “tour!” It’ll be a mini tour at that, but if you’re in Texas then head’s up! On the side I play lead guitar for a fine musician by the name of Lindsay Rae Spurlock. Here’s the shindig:

  • Wednesday night – House Party “We made it celebration” to play and watch the big debut of Lindsay’s music on MTV’s Real World Brooklyn! Tune in and check it out! Screams and hollers will be coming from Austin!
  • Thursday night – Shak-a-Ton Event on Texas A&M’s campus in College Station
  • Friday night – Fort Worth at Lola’s Saloon
  • Saturday night – Dallas at The Cavern

So if you’re close by drop in and say Hello! I’ll be blogging frequently of the tour and hopefully doing some video journaling! We’re going to be big I tell you!!! Isn’t everything bigger in Texas? That’s what they tell me.

Contxts You Need!

contxts

Lifehacker is such a beating to wade through but it’s gems like this that make it all worth it!
Contxts provides you an electronic business card to send to clients/friends/people you’ve met. Instead of handing you a paper card, I just say:

Just text “Conner” to 50500.

And they’ll receive a text with my profile giving them the info I’d like to share.

or…

I’ll just text it to you…

and I can prompt a text to be sent to you!

AND on my iPhone (I don’t have any experience on the Crackberries) the info is blue linked so it’s just waiting to be put into a profile to be stored in my Contacts list!!!

It’s still in the alpha stage so it appears more enhancements are coming. It looks like they’re trying to integrate with LinkedIn and Twitter and Flickr and several other social networks online. But even if none of that comes to fruition, this is pretty sweet!

Go get you an electronic business card! It’s free! I love technology :)

Sunday Setlist March 29 – I’m baaaaaack

sunday_setlist_red21

Today was my first time back up front leading worship in a loooooong time. I know it’s the first time this year! And it was GREAT!

1st: The songs –

All to You – Lincoln Brewster – E
Wholly Yours – David Crowder*Band – G
I Will Not Forget You – ??? – G
Hosanna – Hillsong United – E

Offering – You’re Beautiful – Phil Wickham – Eb

Closing – Oh, Praise Him – Crowder – G

2nd: The team -

3 female backup vox
1 male backup vox
3 guitars: 1 acoustic + 1 electric + me on my Gretsch
bass
drums
percussion

Put those together and what have you got? Bippity Boppity BIGNESS! Oh man, it was FULL! I mean, I don’t typically like alot of backup vocals. I think harmonies can get in the way sometimes but since it was my first time back in a loooong time, I put a call in to some dear friends of mine who used to fill in for me when I led worship and would be out of town. Well this time we could do it together! They’re a husband and wife team with a best friend and they just work incredibly well together. I added a student of mine who loves to sing and so the vocals were STACKED. We had fun trading off lead parts as well which was great for me.

I led All to You and Wholly Yours completely by myself.
I split verses with Matt on I will Not Forget You and Oh, Praise Him.
Matt led You’re Beautiful.
Alyssa led Hosanna.

Another BIGNESS came from 3 guitars! Seriously, there’s no other way to go! Matt led rhythmically on his acoustic, Jim did lead on the electric, and I filled in the between on my Gretsch. It was so much fun for me because I didn’t have to do alot honestly :) I got to play simple clean stuff or with mild distortion to build some bigness. It really showed though. I’ve played Oh, Praise Him easily 1,000 times but this was the best time ever!

We pushed 95/96 which also a great way to fill the room. We kind of had to with the intensity of the songs!

Such a great morning all around! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

How was your Sunday? Have you participated in Fred’s Sunday Setlist? You should!

The Best & Worst of Dreamworks Animation

Rotten Tomatoes

has some great lists and I love lists! However, this time they got it awfully wrong! In a list of the top animated movies that Dreamworks Animations has produced I’m just appalled at what they called the “Best:”

12. Madagascar

11. Madagascar 2

10. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

9. Flushed Away

8. Over the Hedge

7. The Prince of Egypt

6. Kung Fu Panda

5. Shrek 2

4. Shrek

3. Wallace & Grommit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

2. Antz

1. Chicken Run

Not that there aren’t great movies on here but just looking at the Top 3…seriously? If this were my list it’d read:

10. Bee Movie

9. Shrek the Third

8. Madagascar 2

7. The Prince of Egypt

6. Chicken Run

5. Madagascar

4. Flushed Away

3. Shrek 2

2. Kung Fu Panda

1. Shrek

I never saw Were-Rabbit or Spirit, I just hated Antz, it feels weird even having Chicken Run on the same list but I get it, and I don’t approve of Over the Hedge.

How about you?

Parachute Band – Technicolor
Buy/Listen @ iTunes

ALASTAIR VANCE – go to Live to Worship
Synopsis: Let me start by saying I LOVE THIS ALBUM! This is what a good worship album should sound like. There is a real good mix of tracks from high energy to intimate worship and styles that will suit many worshipers – young and old. The band sounds like a cross between Hillsong United and Starfield.
I have not heard any previous Parachute Band songs, so I cannot compare this to other albums but there is a lot of top class tunes on here. If you liked the Jonathan Lee album we reviewed a couple of weeks back there’s a good chance you will dig this one also, or vice versa.
The backing vocals in Everlasting were unexpected (think Lion King), but very well done. I’m not sure it’s one every church could pull off though!

Bottom Line: 4.5 out of 5
I was tempted to give this album 5 out of 5, but we’re still early days on the joint and I don’t want to be handing out top marks to everyone!

Must Have Songs: Oh, where to start?! Grace is my favourite track on the album – it is such a good song, followed by In Liberty (Hallelujah), Living Rain and Take Over. For me there is not really a bad song on this record. Seriously.

Church Songs: Every song on this album is usable in the right setting. Come to the River is an excellent service starter, while Shout it Out and No Eye Has Seen would be fantastic for a youth event. Living Rain, Take Over, Come Before, Grace, In Liberty are all great worship songs and should suit most contemporary congregations.

CONNER BYRD – stick around here
Synopsis: This was my first “official” introduction to the Parachute Band, everything I’d heard in the past was not enough to grab my attention to digest a CD of theirs. Apparently the band’s gone through an entire lineup change and it sounds as if they are going after the youth groups. Their sound is tremendously full utilizing soaring modern delay-erific guitars, driving bass, synth/pads, and…well that’s the problem. The sound is great and full and recognizable like so are many of their contemporaries: the ever popular Hillsong United or Starfield. And therein lies the problem, while full sounding and great tone, I’m just curious if there’s enough to keep me interested. There’s such a resemblance to some of my already favorite bands that I worry that works against them. I’ve enjoyed settling into this CD but I wonder for how long?

Bottom Line: Great sound with some singable songs for youth groups however it may sound too much like your youth groups already favorite songs to be a worthwhile addition. Fantastic mix of soaring guitars and driven keyboards, lead vocal that will either interest you or drive you away, but a lack of background vocals. 3.5 out of 5.

Must have: I want to do Come Before! I love the Modest Mouse-ish Come to the River, the “delay-erific” tones on Take Over and then a tie between Grace and Everlasting.

Church Songs: The keys of these songs could be problematic but sound easy enough to drop. I’d say the most singable would be Your Word, Living Rain, and Come Before.

JOEL KLAMPERT – go to Klampert.com
Synopsis: I had heard about parachute band for many years, but for some reason I never picked up their CD’s until this one. This band is tight. They have a clean sound with some very cool 80’s sounding keys mixed with modern guitar driven worship. The production on this album is great although at times I think the lead vocals were a little too far behind in the mix.
I have listened to this CD many many times and actually did it in multiple locations and I’ll tell you why in the Bottom Line. Over all I think this CD deserves more in the worship community than it is getting. I just don’t hear in the worship community any buzz over this band, but maybe that needs to change.

Bottom Line: My first listen was in my car. Sadly I don’t remember the first or second listen in the car. Nothing stuck out. Sometimes however you need to focus on music an let it sink in. So realizing this I moved over to the i-pod. I figured I would give it one last go. I am glad I did. Alastair sent me messages that he was loving this CD and I just didn’t get it, but honestly this one took a few listens to get it.
Do I like every song on this CD. I can’t say that I do. There however some huge stand outs that make this CD something you need to check out.
“Living Rain” is a brilliant song and I could see using that one in the future. I think while thier fast stuff is fun thier strength is in their slower worship music. It is really powerful. The lead singer has a very different voice which is refreshing. That isn’t more apparent than on the track “Come Before”. Wow, what an anointed time of worship sitting hearing that one.
HA HA….It’s kind of funny because I am sitting here listening for the 5th time and it’s like I’ve never heard these songs, but so glad I am.
If I could make a suggestion for the next CD for these guys is to do a live one because you can hear the heart behind this and I would love to hear that outside of the studio version. Great stuff. “No Eye Has Seen” was a huge surprise. Reminded me of MATW meets REM. It was out of the box and I loved it.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Must Haves: Grace, Come Before, Everlasting

In Church: Well you could pretty much do every song on this CD in one church or another. There are a few I’m not a fan of, but I will be looking at trying a few of these. Like….Grace, Come Before, Come to the River, Living Rain. I think those would be fantastic to do in Church. nice mix too. Two slow and two fast.

Quick Gavin Update

Life’s been a bit hectic lately. The weekend retreat ran right into a birthday dinner for my brother ran right into a full day of substitute teaching on Monday. Meanwhile, back at the Byrd house my wife had to deal with our cat who got in a fight with something and punctured his lymphnodes on his neck causing it to swell up like a golfball on his neck and then just 3 days after our youngest gets off antibiotics returning to a strep throat/tonsillitis.

Any other couples out there attest to everything happening when your man’s away? Thank God for my wife being a trooper and having a BFF like Ali.

So a quick update on Gavin (in case you saw my Twitter and were wondering) is that we’re starting to freak a little bit. I think we can actually just count the days he’s been well instead of being able to count the days he’s been sick. He turns 1 next month and but he’s had ear infections that led to him getting tubes put in when he was 8 months and now that he’s had tubes he’s had recurring allergy/sore throat shenanigans. We’ve had just about every antibiotics you can name.

So please pray for him…and us…

Thank you.

Acquire the Fire Night 1

We survived night 1 of Acquire the Fire! What a night. It was tremendously jam packed. I’m exhausted so all you get is some bulletpoints and a few pics! More info later:

  • Phil Joel leading worship is old school rock meets worship.
  • Someone at Bethany needs to be notified that this is a Youth Retreat so they can turn it up.
  • Joel Johnson spoke tonight with a good talk on wants vs. needs (something my father would be proud of since that was his mantra for about 15 years!)
  • The drama team is top notch! Really impressive.
  • Someone at Bethany needs to be trained on how to use a spot light.
  • First time seeing a half hour altar call in a loooooooooong time.
  • Everyday Sunday was fun.

What I just can’t shake unfortunately from the night was this quote:

All the statistics show that the more time people spend on the internet, the more lonely they become and the more depressed they become!

And I call a big SHENANIGANS. I’d like to see that study. Otherwise, cool night! Fun night. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Loving everyday sundayimg_1709
