“So Conner I was curious that since we live under the new covenant does that mean we no longer are under obligation to the old rules in the Old Testament? Like the 10 Commandments and stuff”

Yeah that came out just as sincere and curious this afternoon hanging out with some of my high schoolers after school in between the conversation about Billy’s skinny legs running sprints and Kelsey not winning Senior Class President.

And vhut vus yur answa gwasshoppa???

    My two cents:
We are not under the law as the means to salvation. Christ freed us from the bondage of our own fallen nature by paying the price on our behalf on the cross. Through the sacrifice of Christ, God’s grace is made available to those who are saved. After Christ’s perfect sacrifice for the new covenant, it is only through God’s grace that we receive salvation, not through the law.

“What shall we say then, that I do not follow the law?” (Paul’s favorite rhetorical intro) No, we follow the law out of obedience to God. It is not the law that provides our salvation, but God’s grace alone.

We are free from the bondage of the law in that we will fail to keep the law no matter how we try; however, we are called to try and thankfully have Christ as our intercessor who sacrificed himself to allow our repentance and receiving of God’s grace in spite of our failings. That is how we are free from the law.

Great question. It’s awesome when youth love you and you’ve built the rapport that they trust you enough to ask these types of questions.

A question like that evokes a conversation or series of conversations more than a simple answer. Although if I were in in your shoes I’d probably talk to my pastor.

How did you end up resolving this?
