Pre-textfessional Nov 18th

This weekend is Bluegrass Sunday! I’ve got some musician friends and/or people that go to our church that play: mandolin, fiddle, banjo, etc. and when Crowder released A Collision I thought: “Hey we could do that.” Since then we’ve done about 3 Bluegrass Sundays and this is the 2nd time we’ve done it for our Thanksgiving Day Feast so it’s probably the 1st traditional tradition thing our church is beginning!

Here’s what’s needed for a toe-tapping hoe down Bluegrass Sunday:

  • Banjo – essential!
  • Fiddle – essentially awesome!
  • Drums – boom chuck boom chuck
  • Mandolin – man it sounds great!
  • Harmonica – it’s the distorted sustain of bluegrass
  • Harmonies – need those vocals
  • Guitar – it’s probably the least important

It makes my week a living nightmare because this is so far out of my comfort zone it’s not even funny but it’s so different from anything we do that the people love it! And bluegrass, in small quantities is fun.

Songs we’re looking at:

  • Foggy Mountain Breakdown – Prelude
  • When the Saints Go Marching In
  • I’ll Fly Away
  • Power in the Blood
  • Wholly Yours – Crowderesque off B Collision
  • I’ll Fly Away – Crowderesque off A/B Collision

That afternoon:

  • Hope lifted
  • I’ll Fly Away
  • Ain’t No Grave
  • Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven – Alison Kraus style
  • Stars

The blending in of the Crowder stuff gives familiar songs a cool new feel to it and pleases those not entirely embracing the Bluegrass.
