The Quantum of Solace Shaken not Stirred

Having the day to digest and think about the latest Bond installment: James Bond and the Quantum of Solace, I’m having difficulty reviewing it without actually giving anything away. So I thought I’d bullet point it for you so I don’t ramble and spoil anything and we can have a dialog perhaps in the comments section.

The Good

  • THE SCORE – Wow, I think aurally this was the most engaging Bond movie. I don’t have anything to validate that statement other than the fact that it’s really memorable in a way that I don’t recall previous movies having the same impact.
  • THE ACTION – Chases! Fights! Stunts! Explosions! Incredible. They sure went all out and it was insane! I’ve already heard comparisons to the Bourne series and I can totally see it. They’re raw and intense.
  • THE SEX APPEAL – I’m so glad that the clips for this movie won’t involve a scantily clad Halle Berry emerging from the sea, or Daniel Craig sporting his speedo, even the intro song graphics aren’t doused in obviously naked silhouettes. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some sex appeal here but it’s scaled back in a good way from what has been typical in Bond movies of the past.
  • THE BOND – I love Daniel Craig’s Bond!

The Bad

  • I hate the shaky cam. It ruined some really incredible chase/action scenes for me. Again, a comparison to Bourne Supremacy.
  • The driving story of this movie. I believe there’s a good story with a good villain with a good resolution here but it’s drowned in the actual plot and story line which centers around revenge. The actual story of the movie is simply a backdrop.
  • There’s only 1 Aston Martin driven the entire time 🙂

So there you have it in a nutshell. A good addition to the genre continuing in the gritty serious acting of Daniel Craig’s Bond. Great action sometimes masked by the cinematography but elevated by the score! The story centers much more on his own character and his emotional drive than the story of villains and good guys. So take that for what it’s worth.

I’m really jonesing to watch Casino Royale again! If you aren’t fresh on Casino Royale I recommend watching it first! This is a sequel and picks up immediately where it ends. (Actually, that’s another GOOD about this movie!)

    Hey Conner,

After I slept through basically the whole movie last week (fell asleep during the title, woke up during the hotel explosions at the end), I got to watch it again tonight. And I totally agree with you. It’s a great action Bond film, not so much story driven as the last one, but still up in my all time top 5 James Bonds.

And now I go to bed and try to catch up on some of that sleep I lost on the return flight 😉

    Good night!
    Stephan
