My Holy Hangover

First off: Mad props to Shawn for the term Holy Hangover.
So what is a Holy Hangover? It’s what we in the ministry affectionately call that feeling we get on Monday Morning. Especially after a day like yesterday:

  • 1:30 – going to bed b/c we are at the beach and get to sleep in tomorrow morning!
  • 7:30 – Up and packing
  • 8:30 – Breakfast
  • 9 – Lead worship for last weekend retreat session
  • 10:30 – Say goodbye and pack up
  • 11:30 – Grab a bite to eat
  • 12 – On the road!…with 2 kids..ugh….
  • 4:10 – Backing trailer into the driveway…Orange Beach -> Baton Rouge in 4 hrs! BOOYAH!
  • 4:15 – Pulling out of the driveway in Rae’s car
  • 4:38 – Youth group! (8 mins late)
  • 6:20 – Wrapping up Youth (20 mins late but was so worth it! Amazing youth tonight!)
  • 6:30 – Changed and off to downtown
  • 7 – Arrived at Whitney’s Celebration Service for 10 Years at First Pres.
  • 8:10 – Hugging and goodbyes
  • 9 – Eating lunch…dinner…um…whatever
  • 9:30 – Check emails put on Psych! It was a Bollywood theme!
  • 11 – Heading to bed. Probably one of the earliest in months…years?

And voila: Monday Morning’s Holy Hangover.

How are you feeling this morning?

Kanye West: Before and After

I am SO SICK of saying, “Man I really love that guy’s music, I just wish he’d keep his stupid mouth shut when he’s not singing.” When a stunt last night can be referred to as “Taylor Swift getting Kanye-d” then enough is enough. I don’t care that he was downing a bottle of Hennesy. I no longer care how talented he is. I know MTV shares the blame with this and it’s another reason why I don’t remember the last time I watched that station.

Here’s Kanye West before last night:

Here’s after:

The Speed of the Internet!

Minutes…hours…after Kanye West showed how much of a ass he is on MTV VMAs (sorry G rated audiences that’s probably the nicest way to describe that jerk) this pops up on youTube! Hilarious. Stunning. Speedy.

Making the Most of The Nines

How can I make the most of nine when I don’t know what you’re talking about?

Well, The Nines is a rather unconventional unconference that has kind of blossomed out of “nowhere” but that doesn’t mean that didn’t get some of the most well respected in church leadership involved! Starting at 9am Central Daylight Time on 09/09/09 they’ll roll out 9 minute videos from these dynamic leaders for roughly 9 hours with about…yeah you guessed it 9,000 in attendance across via laptops, desktops, computers, offices, living rooms, sanctuaries, you name it!

Here’s a highlight of the schedule tomorrow:

9AM — Troy Gramling, Mark Beeson, Anne Jackson, Dave Ferguson, Scott Hodge
10AM — Perry Noble, Stacy Spencer
11AM — Dino Rizzo, Nancy Beach, Steven Furtick, Reggie McNeal
12PM — Craig Groeschel, Leonard Sweet, Greg Surratt, Jon Tyson
1PM — Margaret Feinberg, Larry Osborne, Matt Carter, Pete Wilson
2PM — Neil Cole, Reggie Joiner, JD Greear
3PM — Mark Batterson, Dan Kimball, Mark DeYmaz
4PM — Jud Wilhite, Brian McLaren, Bob Roberts, Rick McKinley, John Ortberg
5PM — Alan Hirsch, John Bishop, Toby Slough, Ed Stetzer
6PM — Mark Driscoll, Darrin Patrick, Brad Powell
7PM — Darrin Whitehead, Brian Bloye
8PM — Eric Bryant, Nancy Ortberg, Rick Warren

Can I get an Amen!?! I mean WOWZERS that list is insane! When you miss something (b/c it’s an all day marathon you will miss something) check out the tops of the hours.

This is probably the best post I’ve seen on how to tackle tomorrow. [ht: Will Mancini!] Click through but here’s the bullet-points for you:

  1. Carve out as much time as possible to watch live. – opposed to a centralized room the size of an ocean with 9k in attendance, it’ll feel like these leaders are sitting across the table talking to YOU! Join the experience with the online community that you won’t be able to get watching downloads later.
  2. Keep streaming tweets while watching live. – utilizing the communication guerilla Twitter all the tweets containing #thenines will be in conversation together.
  3. Zero in by asking the Holy Spirit for help. – PRAY
  4. Think “syntopically.” – other than some high profilers at each hour it’ll truly be interesting how the topics come out!
  5. Focus reflection. – SUPER recommendation by Will Mancini!!! Word for word: All of this great content must translate, at some point, to meaningful take-aways based on the clarity of your own calling. My personal strategy will be to take hand written notes, that I will group eventually into no more than three categories. In my experience, if a leaders tries to carry more than three ideas, thoughts, or actions away in their wheelbarrow, he or she risks tipping over and having nothing.
  6. Act immediately. – Implementation and execution is the key otherwise we all sat around and wasted a day’s worth of work.

So who’s in? If not? You’ll hate my Twitter and Facebook by 9pm tomorrow! Hahaha!

Register here.

Read the New Testament with Us

Hey so September means alot of things but this year it means we’re going to read through the New Testament. I accepted the call from everyone’s favorite Mudpuppy and shared it with my wife who got totally stoked about the idea! SO, starting today, Sept. 1st 2009 we’re going to read through the New Testament and somehow someway discuss.

I’d ask that you to join us for the month, for a week, for a day. The outline is simple. Russell and his wife are reading the Message, Rae and I are reading the Voice so none of us are legitimate Christians but we’re trying 🙂

Here’s our schedule:

1. Matthew 1-9
2. Matthew 10-15
3. Matthew 16-22
4. Matthew 23-28
5. Mark 1-8
6. Mark 9-16
7. Luke 1-6
8. Luke 7-11
9. Luke 12-18
10. Luke 19-24
11. John 1-7
12. John 8-13
13. John 14-21
14. Acts 1-7
15. Acts 8-14
16. Acts 15-21
17. Acts 22-28
18. Romans 1-8
19. Romans 9-16
20. 1 Corinthians 1-9
21. 1 Corinthians 10-16
22. 2 Corinthians 1-13
23. Galatians – Ephesians
24. Philippians – 2 Thessalonians
25. 1 Timothy – Philemon
26. Hebrews
27. James – 2 Peter
28. 1 John – 3 John
29. Revelation 1-11
30. Revelation 12-22

Would you join us?

Thanks again Mud. I think Rae might even be more excited about this than she was before the last Twilight book came out 🙂

It’s all about rhythm!

Call it what you like, I’m  musician so I’ll call it rhythm possibly even “groove!” I’ve noticed my life taking a different rhythm lately. Tonight was a huge example of that! For years the rhythm of my Thursdays were something like 10-12 hour days sticking around church all day because it was too much of a hassle to leave and go home and come back again for worship practice. Feeling spunky I might get a Smoothie around 5:15. Getting home around 9:30 or so I’d grab some left over dinner and eat on the sofa catching up with Project Runway and The Ultimate Fighter with Rae. It’s not something I thought about…it’s just what I did.

Well, tonight was the first time I did that in quite some time. I felt like I was dying on the way home! I was tired, cranky, hungry (I even had my Smoothie!), even disoriented (see crazy tweets!)

SO WHAT IS RHYTHM?!? You know it, even if you can’t describe it. It’s when you find yourself tapping your foot, bobbing your head, or jumping up and down. It’s a particular pattern of a beat or accent that recurs over time.

As with a song, our lives find a certain rhythm. Tonight’s irregular pulse in the rhythm I’ve found my evenings has had me notice a few things that have become rhythmic in my life that I am certainly grateful for:

  • My new mornings: I’m trying to save some $$$ and am really using my own coffee maker instead of trucking to St. Arbucks so much! It’s given me some pep in the morning b/c I am certainly NOT a morning person!
  • My new soundtrack: there is a sudden influx of some great music in my life but none more entertaining than my good friend David Loti’s new solo project Amalgam. Chloe asks for it every morning on the way to day care and has become special to the both of us singing along to his crazy songs!
  • My Wednesday Men’s Small Group: It feels new only because I missed so much in the Summer because of camps. This group is the source of my sanity and an audible voice of God’s wisdom speaking into my life each week by some great men!
  • My new attitude: Rae says I must be man-strating because I’m in this crazy cleaning craze! Cleaning the house, my desk, and my office at church! It’s nuts! Sounds silly but I’ve even been cleaning up around here! (Notice the “Under Construction” sign above?) My Google Reader is streamlined and working insanely well!

I’m sure there are others. This has been a great exercise to take note of what’s going on around me. I’m looking forward to a new one that Rae and I will be tackling with Mud next month in reading through the New Testament in September!

What about you?

Purge Strategy Session #1

For a desperate attempt to get me up and blogging again I’m taking my social networks by storm starting with my Google Reader!
Previously I had tried to create some specific folders to categorize all of you in. That failed and many of you ended up unfoldered. GReader now looks like this:

Google Reader Folders

It’s pretty self explanatory but in case you need help:
Local – All my locals blogging
Red – STOP and read ASAP
Yellow – Read these next
Green – If I have time I’ll get to you. I also put people I’m not really sure why I’m following in here as well. If I don’t recognize you this week then…buh-bye, otherwise you’re golden…literally 🙂 get it! Haha.
Church News – Church blogs or those pertaining specifically to doing church.
Entertainment News – Specific entertainment blogs

So that’s how I went this time around.

Next comes Twitter with similar categories in Tweet Deck.

Then Facebook.

Finally this here blog!

But this does mean…I’M BACK people!
