Sunday Setlist April 19th – Bluegrass and My Video!

[RSS Readers Video Embeded Below]

I know you want to talk about the music but I want to talk about my video! Hahaha.
This week we were supposed to have another Bluegrass Sunday, we do those from time to time, but we didnt have any banjo 😦 So it was still different but more folksy acoustic different than Bluegrass different. It’s still fun though seeing how white our congregation is and apparently NOT country. It’s my understanding that you clap on the upbeat or ‘and’ of the beat with the snare hit but instead we jumped on the downbeat with the kick drum hit and it was just ridiculous. But in a good way, haha!

  1. I Saw the Light
  2. Lord Most High
  3. Come Thou Fount
  4. I’ve Got a River of Life
  5. Offering – Jesus, Help me to Stand
  6. Communion – Amazing Grace/ Blessed Assurance
  7. O Love that Will Not Let Me Go

Instrumentation this week was: Acoustic, Dobro, Mandolin, Acoustic & Harmonica, Fiddle, & Drums.

So what do you do in your church to change things up a bit?!?!

NOW we also started a new volunteer recruitment series called Real Men of Jesus or Real Women of Jesus depending on the week. It’s a bit dated I know but it was terribly fun to do! And this year that’s what we wanted to do. Highlight some real and not so real jobs in the church that volunteers do in a real fun, real quick way and then have someone live talk about it. This week’s kicked off the series and you can see we went with a real SERIOUS overtone.

It might not be as funny to you unless you know that we have these 2 geese that truly do plague our church, that the staff makes up the band, and that’s one of our elders decked out!

I hope you’re participating in Fred’s blog carnival of Sunday Setlists!

I Just Wanna Say Israel’s New Video is worth checking out

So we reviewed Israel Houghton’s new CD, The Power of One recently here and here and here on the Joint. If you remember, yours truly wasn’t a big fan. However, today the video for I Just Wanna Say dropped over @loswhit ‘s Ragamuffin Soul blog and after we crashed his site, I got a chance to watch it.

I’ll tell you, for all my criticism of Israel, the guy makes up for it in energy and feel. I think the only thing that ‘bothers’ me about it is the camera angle of him on the drums and bass. It makes him look like a little guy. (Unless of course, he really is a little guy, to which, I apologize profusely.)

So check it out!

This is the best music video I’ve seen in who know’s how long!

Here’s a great exclusive interview with Johnny.

High quality.

U2 better work their @sses off this year!! HAHAHA.

Posting quality video help!

How are you posting videos to your blogs?

YouTube? Vimeo? Picasa? Other?

I typically use youTube because iMovie automatically will export it for me. However, the quality I get is horrific. So what’s the best way to post some videos here that you’re using that don’t suck the life out of them?!?!

Musician Spotlight Jake Smith Band

If your a local then you should be heading over to the Varsity Theatre tonight to check out one of our local prodigies. Hopefully, you’ve already been exposed to Jake but if you’ve been living in a barrel then don’t miss out.
For all you out of townies, truck over to his site and allow me to introduce you to Jake. If I may rip right out of a recent interview he had with the Varsity Theatre:

a band that embodies the richness and eclecticism of the New Orleans culture. A fusion of funk, soul, R&B and rock blend harmoniously to create the sounds unique to a band named for the front man himself, Jake Smith

That’s just a beautiful statement and description of why I love this band so much. There are certain ‘cats’ who have this style vocally and musically that make you jealous of why they were given so much soul and talent. Jake falls into that category! His recordings are fun and eclectic but there is nothing like his live shows! Fluid, fun, tight, and incredible. I think Real got a little too polished for me, however, that’s not really a “bad” thing when you look at it. His new EP recaptures some of the magic when you strip down some of his songs and Jake’s ability to shine when there isn’t a full band accompanying him.

Head over and tap your feet to Can’t Save Your Soul, Make Me Move, and What I Plan to Do. Swoon over These Things and Real Love. Get some insight into what Jake’s trying to do through Outro. Then there’s always favorites like Get Up and Shady (Crazy.)

I’ll go ahead and just say “Your Welcome!”

Jake, these are the wonderful folks at Worship City.
Worship City, this is Jake!

Jake Smith concert details at The Varsity Oct. 9th $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Doors open at 8pm and show starts at 9pm. Songs will be stuck in your head until the end of the weekend.

AMPed no longer

With all the various energy drinks out there I sometimes don’t know which one to choose. Thankfully, AMP has just made my decision easier.

Cheap laughs… yes.

Horrendous message… sweet Jesus have mercy on their souls…

Monster Energy Drinks I’m all yours apparently!

Deliciously yummy! Just can’t wait!!

Interesting…can you see me now?!?!

Words with meaning – Broken

Man, oh man, I simply cannot get enough of this song. Interpret it how you will, I find it encouraging and hopeful! It truly hones in on the brokenness that we suffer from. Sure it could be a lost love, but this song to me captures so much more.
How many times have I wanted to not get up in the morning?
How many times have I put on a front that’s as transparent as glass but I hide behind it ever still?
How many times have I ran off but know exactly how and who to come home to?
Sometimes I simply find myself barely holding on…but I’m holding on and that’s the important thing. Christ doesn’t offer us a glamorous easy life but the knowledge that He’s got things in order and working them out according to his glory is more thank OK for me.

The broken clock is a comfort, it helps me sleep tonight
Maybe it can stop tomorrow from stealing all my time
And I am here still waiting, though I still have my doubts
I am damaged at best like you’ve already figured out

I’m falling apart, barely breathing
With a broken heart that’s still beating
In the pain there is healing
In your name I find meaning
So I’m holding on
I’m barely holding on to you

The broken locks were a warning you got inside my head
I tried my best to be guarded but I’m an open book instead
And I still see your reflection inside of my eyes
That are looking for purpose they’re still looking for life

I’m falling apart, barely breathing
With a broken heart that’s still beating
In the pain there is healing
In your name I find meaning
So I’m holding on
I’m barely holding on to you

I’m hanging on another day
Just to see what you will throw my way
And I’m hanging on to the words you say
You said that I will, I will be okay

Broken lights on the freeway left me here alone
I may have lost my way now; haven’t forgotten my way home
I’m falling apart, barely breathing
With a broken heart that’s still beating
In the pain there is healing
In your name I find meaning
So I’m holding on
I’m barely holding on to you

Gather ’round for yer Bluegrass entertainment!

OK so first a few quick disclaimers:

  • Our fiddler and additional guitarist finger picker weren’t able to make it back that afternoon so we’re not 100% Bluegrassin’ it like we were that mornin’.
  • You get your Children’s Pastor to record for you and she can’t help but focus on the children in the congregation 🙂
  • We are NOT a backwoods inbred hillbilly church, we are MOST definitely a group of people who love Jesus and love having a good time!

The audio suffers when the mics not directed toward the band but you get a great sense of the overall feel of things!

Watch the Long Road to Ruin

Another reason these guys are one of my favorite bands ever!! What a follow up after the stellar video of The Pretender. Apparently, Rashida Jones is looking for extra work since she didn’t get officially picked up with The Office and with the strike it looks like her pilot in the works may not get lift off.

I’ve got to admit, I will pay top dollar for an iron on shirt of Dave like that!!!
